Soursop showed undeniable blood sugar-lowering properties when giving as a supplement or direct injection to rats.
When researchers gave diabetic rats soursop extracts for two weeks, they noticed that the rats that received the injection had lower blood sugar levels compared to the control group.
In another study, diabetic rats had 75% lower blood sugar levels after receiving Guyabano extracts.
It may help regulate blood pressure
Chronic blood hypertension is an extremely common condition that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, strokes, and peripheral artery disease.
To analyze the effects of soursop on blood pressure, scientists conducted a study on laboratory rats with hypertension. They used intravenous administration of Guyabano extracts and kept assessing blood pressure of heart rate in the rats. At the end of the study, scientists found that the rats had significantly lower blood pressure compared to baseline without any changes in the heart rate. The next question that researchers had to answer was the underlying mechanism of action that led to this result. At first, Guyabano extracts were thought to exert their antihypertensive properties through one of these three mechanisms: Muscarinic pathway Adrenergic pathway Histaminic pathway However, it turned out that the main driver of these results was mediated via the antagonism of calcium action. For reference, there is a whole family of antihypertensive drugs that exert its action by blocking calcium interaction with its receptors –it’s the calcium channel blocker family–. These findings warrant the launch of clinical studies to objectively evaluate the effectiveness of Guyabano on blood pressure in humans.
