The Major Benefits of Guyabano Fruit - from a medical point of view

A blog post by Zac Hyde, certified physician, (MD), Algeria

Overview

Guyabano, also known as soursop, is a type of fruit that offers a myriad of health benefits to our bodies. This fruit is usually found in the tropical regions of the Americas and has been gaining popularity over the past few years because of its health-boosting properties and delicious taste.

Guyabano is typically eaten raw to avoid destroying the antioxidants found inside.

In this article, we will cover the major benefits of Guyabano and what you can expect from consuming this fruit.

Top benefits of Guyabano fruit

High nutritional value

Despite having low calories, Guyabano is loaded in other nutrients that replenish your body with the necessary macros and vitamins.

Here are the major compounds found in a 100-gram portion of Guyabano:

  • Calories: 66

  • Protein: 1 gram

  • Sugars: 16.8 grams

  • Fiber: 3.3 grams

  • Vitamin C: 34%

  • Vitamin B1: 5%

  • Potassium: 8%

  • Magnesium: 5%

As you can see, fiber and vitamin C are found in large quantities, which is extremely beneficial for the digestive tract.

Moreover, vitamin C ensures a variety of physiological processes, including:

  • Reducing the risk of chronic diseases

  • Helping with chronic blood hypertension

  • Decreasing the risk of cardiovascular disease

  • Improving symptoms of gout

  • Helping with iron deficiency

  • Boosting the immune system

High antioxidant content

The richness of Guyabano in antioxidants is the main reason it offers this number of health benefits.

If you’re not familiar with oxidative stress, it is a metabolic state where the balance between reactive oxygen species and antioxidants gets disrupted.

When this occurs, the body becomes susceptible to a variety of medical conditions, including coronary artery disease (CAD), blood hypertension, and neurocognitive ailments (e.g., Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease).

In a 2013 laboratory study, researchers found that Guyabano can neutralize reactive oxygen species, which restores the balance in the intracellular and intraluminal milieu.

So far, no clinical studies were conducted on human subjects to assess the effectiveness of the antioxidants found in this fruit on oxidative stress.

Antibacterial properties

Guyabano was shown to possess potent antibacterial compounds that help eradicate bacteria and fungi of the body.

In one study, scientists analyzed the efficacy of Guyabano in killing oral bacteria and fungi and concluded that “The present study demonstrated the in-vitro efficacy of Soursop was highest against S. mutans followed by C. albicans and least on P. intermedia.”

These findings suggest that soursop is efficient in eradicating germs and reducing the risk of opportunistic infections, such as candidiasis.

Anti-inflammatory properties

Inflammation is a physiological response to foreign bodies that attack our organism. This reaction is characterized by 4 cardinal signs, which are:

  • Tumor (swelling)

  • Rubor (redness)

  • Dolor (pain)

  • Calor (warmth)

While the initiation of the inflammatory response after aggression on the body is essential, the chronic elevation of proinflammatory cytokines in the bloodstream can lead to dire consequences.

Chronic inflammation is the hallmark of several maladies, including autoimmune conditions (e.g., systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis), cardiovascular disease, and more.

For this reason, it is crucial to supply your body with natural anti-inflammatory compounds such as those we can find in Guyabano.

In one study, scientists observed that giving rats soursop extracts helped in reducing inflammation and swelling.

It may reduce the risk of some cancers

During several test-tube experiments, researchers found that Guyabano extracts have antineoplastic properties.

These compounds help destroy several cancer types by optimizing the function of the immune system and destroying the cellular membranes of cancer cells.

Moreover, when tested on tumor masses, they significantly shrunk in size. Another study found that this fruit is also effective against leukemia cancer cells when tested in the laboratory.

It is important to note that all of these studies were conducted in test tubes, and no clinical trials were ever launched.

Therefore, you should not believe someone who claims that Guyabano will cure your cancer, as they are probably trying to scam you.

This does not mean that the fruit cannot be an effective compound against cancer cells, it only means that we need more research and studies before coming up with any final conclusions.

It may be beneficial for diabetic patients

Soursop showed undeniable blood sugar-lowering properties when giving as a supplement or direct injection to rats.

When researchers gave diabetic rats soursop extracts for two weeks, they noticed that the rats that received the injection had lower blood sugar levels compared to the control group.

In another study, diabetic rats had 75% lower blood sugar levels after receiving Guyabano extracts.

It may help regulate blood pressure

Chronic blood hypertension is an extremely common condition that increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, strokes, and peripheral artery disease.

To analyze the effects of soursop on blood pressure, scientists conducted a study on laboratory rats with hypertension. They used intravenous administration of Guyabano extracts and kept assessing blood pressure of heart rate in the rats. At the end of the study, scientists found that the rats had significantly lower blood pressure compared to baseline without any changes in the heart rate. The next question that researchers had to answer was the underlying mechanism of action that led to this result. At first, Guyabano extracts were thought to exert their antihypertensive properties through one of these three mechanisms: Muscarinic pathway Adrenergic pathway Histaminic pathway However, it turned out that the main driver of these results was mediated via the antagonism of calcium action. For reference, there is a whole family of antihypertensive drugs that exert its action by blocking calcium interaction with its receptors –it’s the calcium channel blocker family–. These findings warrant the launch of clinical studies to objectively evaluate the effectiveness of Guyabano on blood pressure in humans.

Takeaway message

Guyabano is a fantastic fruit that offers multiple health benefits due to its content in antioxidative, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory compounds. Incorporating this fruit into your diet is an important step to optimize your health and aid your body fight off foreign pathogens.
